Project

CAUTION brings together six visual and performance artists from around the world to collaborate directly and remotely through a series of meetings, residencies, actions and correspondences taking place across continents. The project explores notions of identity, similarity and difference through journeys, actions and performance in real-time and online, culminating in an exhibition at Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast as part of the London 2012 Festival from 24th August to 29th September 2012.
CAUTION is led by Belfast-based artist and curator Sinéad O’Donnell with artists Sylvette Babin (Montreal, Canada), Mariel Carranza (Los Angeles, USA/Lima, Peru), Paul Couillard (Toronto, Canada), Poshya Kakl (Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq) and Shiro Masuyama (Tokyo, Japan).
During 2011, Sinéad will visit each artist in their own country and work with them to produce material for the final exhibition. The process is cumulative and each artist will build upon ideas generated by previous encounters and journeys with Sinéad connecting the artists; acting as a catalyst for the progression of the work and the gathering of material and documentation.
This project allows the artists to explore their limits physically, artistically and geographically. Through CAUTION they seek to break some of these boundaries and cross borders but also to work with the edges of their abilities. They engage with each other and their audience in enterprising ways as they find the extreme points at which their disabilities make communication difficult and the interesting and innovative strategies they find to exchange ideas.
Documentation of process in progress is updated regularly on this website.
